My Mom's Shout Out in General Conference!
I can't remember the last time I was so excited for General Conference, but this year for some reason I was so excited to hear what the prophets had to say!!!! It felt like Christmas this weekend, and hearing the beginning of each talk and topic was like ripping open the wrapping paper on a present. (super exhilarating!!) I was really inspired by all of the wonderful talks. I have to say though, that the best moment of Conference was definitely Sister Allred's shout out to my mom! That was so sweet and so totally unexpected! Sister Allred's daughter Karla is in our ward here in Connecticut and she is one of our close and dear friends. Her two daughters (Eva, 3 and Sylvia, 15 mos.) are some of favorite babysitting friends (: For the first two years that Karla lived here, my mother was her visiting teacher [she was just reassigned to someone else in November :( ] When we lived in Texas, my mom was the Relief Society president for a few years and she always always stressed the importance of visiting teaching. I was only a teenager then but it left a definite impression on me that visiting teaching is one of the most important and direct ways that we can serve each other. I am not always the best visiting teacher, but I always try to do my best. I have been blessed by having several wonderful visiting teachers who have saved my bacon on numerous occasions. After hearing my mom's example today being broadcast to millions of people around the world, it not only made me extremely proud to be her daughter, but inspired and reminded me to not only visit and teach, but also to love and to serve. She is being super modest about it and keeps saying that it was just an ordinary friend helping a friend in need, but the fact that it isn't a big deal to her, and that it is just second nature to her, speaks volumes about my mom and her attitude about charity and compassionate service. YAY MOM! YOU ARE THE BEST (: AND YAY SISTER ALLRED, YOU ARE ALSO THE BEST (: What a great Conference, I am so sad it's over!
